Finding an internship can be really hard. Fortunately, the web and social media have made the task much easier, again.

Here are 5 great tips to help you out.

Please share in the comments if you know some more and share this article with the students you know.

1. Dig in LinkedIn.com with “site:linkedin.com Internship”

Using the unknown “site:yoursite.com” function on Google can be a very powerful tool. Most of the search forms will show you limited (or not accurate) results if you don’t have the PRO Version. So enjoy Google’s algorithms and search for what you need. It could be simply “Internship”, “Internship Sydney”, or look for the sector you are targeting such as “Logistics Vancouver”.

TIP 1: Use the ’search options’ to display only recent results. Chances are your resume will be on the top of the pile.

TIP 2: Try using other sites like viadeo.com, monster.com, etc.

TIP 3: Don’t forget Google.ca, Google.fr, Google.it, don’t sort the results the same way…

Click here to see the results

–break–

2. Leverage the Twitter Search with Hootsuite

There are a lot of discussions on Twitter about internships and jobs. Search for “Internship AND NYC” for example. Best practice is to read the tweets 15min in the morning and 15min before you go to bed. That way to don’t waste your time. I’m sure you will find lots of opportunities. I personally recommend Hootsuite as it’s the best twitter client for that.

TIP: Use Hootsuite Mobile and find your internship from wherever you are.

3. Use Google Insights to understand your competition

Click here to see the results. Here we learn that January/February is when students decide to look for an internship, probably for the summer from looking at the stats. We also learn that Google is still where people want to work the most and Kenyans are intensively looking for internships (or maybe one guy is obsessed and searches it 10 000 times per day, who knows?).

4. Use Google Realtime to look in the past

Use Google Realtime to look in the past and find lonely tweets that didn’t get any responses. Let’s say you were on vacation when all the HR people decided to tweet about their internships, or if you’re kind of last minute (should never happen) and you need to check what everyone was offering 2 months ago. No problem. Maybe someone gave up looking for an intern: you have a chance here.

TIP: Looking at the charts, you will also understand what are the periods of the day/month/year when people tweet the most about your field. Interesting isn’t?

5. Find Groups and People To Talk To on LinkedIn.com

LinkedIn Groups can be very powerful, a lot of them are very active and most of the time the discussion thread will be sent to the members mailbox.

1. Join Groups 2. Start a Discussion 3. Interact with people.

One more thing… Help the HR People and Be easy to find

Try to make HR people’s life easier. Create a single web page with all your contact information and refer to it everywhere you go. I personally use about.me/alextoul and find it pretty awesome.

CONCLUSION: I hope you find this useful. Please add your ideas/reactions in the comments and share this article with the people who might be looking for an internship in the future.

PS: I think we can say thanks to the people behind Google, Twitter, Linkedin and Hootsuite for making our lifes much easier.

For the next 5 years, technology is going to rewrite all the rules our world set up: education, culture, connectivity, start-up, business model, everything is being changed by the technology. My favorite so far is how the power is returning to the users and how the leaders of tomorrow are more likely to be communities rather than big players.

Let’s talk about 3 radical changes that are going to happen and will change the way the world works. Again.

1. Internet will become insanely fast.

The video below talks by itself: “speed”. Google has been insisting a lot on it recently and it’s because they know speed can open doors to a lot of opportunities. It’s not so much about storage (even if it will be nice to download a movie in 6s) but more about fast-connectivity and data-instant-transfer (ok the cloud). Speed can solve almost every problem, fiber optic will make internet 100X faster and helps internet to offer a way better User Experience. HD Movie, HD Pictures, Everything Streaming, Storing and sharing files instantly. Potentially even the theaters will be streaming movies, all thanks to speed.

2. Everything will be moved to the cloud (yes, everything).

Most of people usually underestimate the power of the cloud. Cloud has just started and once you really understand what’s in Microsoft and Apple’s minds (I sneaked Microsoft just to be nice) you start to realize how their current moves makes even more sense on the long-term. Reasons why computers are getting thinner, cheaper and smaller is because everything is moving to the cloud: pictures with Facebook, videos with Youtube, Netflix and soon Google or Apple TV, video montage with Animoto, translation with Google Translate, and you know the rest.

Next will be the software entirely in the cloud and combined with massive storage and CPU power, once Internet will become insanely fast, our computer will get cheaper but way more powerful thanks to the interconnectivity it has with the cloud. You would be able to watch any movies, use any softwares, watch any TV channels, all on-demand. Plus all your datas will be synchronized across all your devices. Instead of buying a $2000 computer, we will be buying 10 times more monthly plans to satisfy our need. I don’t know if it’s going to be cheaper at the end but it will definitely be awesome.

3. VOIP & Voice translation will open the borders forever.

You talk to your car in English and it sends an email to your Japanese client’s phone in Japanese. You will be able to call anywhere in the world, not only with relatively no-costs but also with free translation on-the-fly. Voice Recognition + Cloud Translation Service + VOIP + Mobile connectivity = HUGE new opportunities. The mobile explosion has already given to most human being an access the net but Voice Translation on-the-fly is going to connect every person on earth. And I’m not even talking about the Voice Translation API Google will release.

4. Conclusion.

I hope you like the snapshot of future. Well, a not-so-far future. The first side-effect of the Cloud has already accelerated the pace of innovation by 8, but the second step will be far beyond any expectations we can have. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen. Actually, maybe I can, because it’s probably just a matter of months.

What do you think? Anything else you see happening?

You’ve probably been amazed too by the lastest changes technology brought to our life.

Thanks to Facebook, you can share memories better with your best friends, thanks to Meetup you can meet people who share the same passion than you, thanks to your mobile you can have an instant access to any information you’re looking for, learn anywhere and never be bored anymore.

Ask your grandmother if this is not truly magical?

I personnaly recently realized that without Skype I would probably not be able to handle a long-distance relationship and lose the one I love.

It just makes me so happy. Really. In fact, the creators of all of these technologies knew they were working really hard for a reason: increase their users happiness. And they did.

So I started to look other sources of happiness around me that were not amplified by the effect of technology. Here in Canada, it’s hard to not see how happy Canadians are when it comes to hockey. Watching and playing hockey is probably the 2nd best source of happiness after… Sex (-;

Hockey and sports in general help a lot of people to live better. But there was no decent platform to connect players each other, nothing that creates this WOW effect from connecting with people you wish you met earlier. You know them: same passion, levels, availability or even location. No technology to improve your hockey experience.

This is why we created hockey-community.com, to increase the players happiness by helping them to play more hockey instantly with people they would never connect with before.

If you don’t think it is worth the effort, go in Canada and visit the dressroom after a game. Players are just genuinely happy. At the same time, others would love to play more but they just don’t have the time to look for their matches.

We’re hoping Hockey-Community.com will bring the solutions they’ve been looking for.

The shift that is happening is pretty crazy. Mobile & Tablets are blowing away the PC. But wait. The impact is bigger than we think, my friend Marty just came back from the future with a story:

The shift that is happening is pretty crazy. Mobile & Tablets are blowing away the PC. But wait. The impact is bigger than we think, my friend Marty just came back from the future with a story:

“In China, I walking in a restaurant that I saw that 34″ screen showing not only my face but also of my best friends favourite meals that I’m more likely to enjoy. Then I started to realize that the menu was in mandarin so I asked to the waiter if I could have an english menu. Guess what?? She laughed at me. ‘Why don’t you get your phone to translate it? You Americans!’”

The cloud X building, face & voice recognition X translation on the fly X the social graph X miniaturization of the connected devices = Probably something you can’t even imagine!!

That’s it, now Internet is in the air. It is no longer true that internet is associated with a device. At least it won’t be in the future.

–break–
In fact, it’s a pretty good news. It means that one way to innovate is to look around you and see if every moves, motions, interactions, facts or even relationships are stored somewhere. If not, there’s an opportunity to add value using technology to transform this data into something helpful.

The pace of innovation on the internet has never been faster, the cost of setting up outstanding web technology is so ridiculously low that thousands of start-ups are building the new tomorrow.

So what? Well, I don’t know… But I’m pretty skeptical.. Everything sounds great huh? Not really. Small businesses were just started to take off on the “new-affordable” web but now there’s no way they can afford a mobile App. At least until decent Mobile CMS start to show up. But if the web keep moving that fast, I’m scared that a new era will take place, increase the cost of ”being technologically remarkable”, and blow away bootstrapping start-ups. What do you think?

10 years ago, it costs 10.000$ to build a decent website, today it’s a cool mobile App, and tomorrow?

Have a look to how good we were 10 years after the TV went out, pretty shitty isn’t it?
How old is internet again?
